Description

What is Black Pepper?

Originally from India, black pepper is the fruit of the climbing plant (pepper plant). These berries are one of the most widely used spices in the world. Its aroma is ideal for seasoning dishes. It is known for its pungent taste and numerous properties.

Cultivation of Black Pepper in Madagascar

Frenchman Émile Prudhomme introduced pepper cultivation to Madagascar in the early 20th century. The introduction of pepper began in Nosy-Be and then expanded in Sambirano. It is still cultivated on the southeast coast of the island from Nosy Varika to Farafangana, along the Indian Ocean. Pepper is harvested twice a year, in May/July and October/November. There are two flowering seasons per year in Madagascar.

Description of Piper Nigrum

Originally from India, Piper Nigrum belongs to the Piperaceae family. It is a perennial vine that can reach 10m in length. Its leaves are oval, alternate, and simple. Its fruits, pepper, are often used to enhance dishes. Its skin is green at the time of picking but darkens due to heat. Its taste is sharp and pungent.

History of Black Pepper

Originally from southwest India, specifically the Kerala region on the Malabar coast. Its name comes from the Latin word “piper”. The use of pepper dates back 4000 years, and it was used for various purposes. It was often used to enhance dishes but also as a form of currency. Merchants of the time called it “black gold”. Nowadays, it is one of the most popular spices in cooking and is also called the “king of spices”.
